Pet Wellness Care in Omaha

We want to be your partner in your pet’s care. Like any relationship, communication is important, and we hope you find value in your pet’s annual exams and check-ups. Bringing your pet to Florence Animal Hospital for physical examinations is crucial to his or her health. We offer thorough physical examinations so that we can detect any potential problems before they become major health concerns. Many pet health problems can be avoided through regular physical exams, which is why we recommend that your pet have at least one examination with our doctor every year and one examination every six months for senior pets over 8 years of age.

What exactly does a physical exam include? During your pet’s physical exam, the doctor will look at and feel your pet from head to tail. All major body systems will be examined such as eyes, ears, mouth, teeth, musculoskeletal system, skin and haircoat, heart and lungs, abdomen, and more. What is considered normal is a combination of what is normal for the breed and what is normal for your specific unique pet. Every pet is a little bit different, just like every human is different. Once the veterinarian does the basic physical exam, any areas of concern will be given more attention.

During your pet’s wellness appointment, we will discuss what is recommended for your specific pet such as:

  • recommended vaccinations flea
  • tick, and heartworm prevention
  • yearly fecal testing for intestinal parasites
  • yearly heartworm testing
  • yearly wellness panel tests (especially for our senior and geriatric patients!)
  • and any other tests, medications, or recommendations the doctor may have.

The doctor is always happy to answer any questions or concerns you might have for your pet during these visits so please take note of anything you want to discuss about your pet.

Pet Vaccinations

Many of the diseases that can affect dogs and cats are preventable through proper pet vaccinations. From your first visit to Florence Animal Hospital, we’ll make sure your pet is up-to-date on their vaccines and put on a schedule that makes sure they continue to stay up-to-date.

Depending on your pet’s age, medical history, lifestyle, and environment, our Omaha veterinarians will discuss the best course of action in regard to your pet’s vaccine schedule. You can bring your cat or dog in as early as eight weeks for his or her first round of vaccines.

Vaccines and Side Effects
You may worry about the safety of vaccines for your pets. Most pets don’t experience any side effects. Commonly, your pet might experience some tenderness at the injection site and sleepiness the day of the vaccines. Possible side effects vary but can include fatigue, fever, hives, facial swelling, vomiting, or diarrhea. Pets may rarely have life-threatening reactions to vaccines. If you notice any of these symptoms after a vaccine, please call us or a local ER vet. In most cases, the benefits of the vaccine far outweigh the risks, but our staff are ready to help you make the best decision for your pet.
